I had to pick up my nephew late last night at the Ann Arbor train depot. He called to make arrangements. I told him to look for the Boxster.
He laughed and asked, "Top down?"
"Sure," I answered, even though it had been unseasonably cold. I am glad I did.
Driving to the station with the top down at night reminded me of how special the world is at night in an open car. You can hear the crickets chirp as you wait at a stop light. You can see a canopy of stars above you. The gauges glow so invitingly in the dark.
Waiting by the tracks in the open Boxster was also wonderful. The train seemed so panoramic as it thundered into the station.
And once we were under way, our conversation flowed easily, accompanied by the throaty roar of the tail pipes. Did having the top down help with that too? It certainly didn't hurt.
They say Enzo Ferrari once said that roadsters are for playboys and coupes are for drivers.
I wonder if driving a top down Boxster at night would have changed his opinion.

Something tells me that Ferry would have said that the difference between coupes and roadsters didn't really matter as long as they are driven often and the drive is an experience to be remembered.
But then, I guess that's the difference between the two marques....
Interesting speculation, Mark. I think that would be true.
